Many studies have examined tree design, branching patterns and their cross-sectional areas, which has led to the arising of certain theories and rules about this subject. Leonardo da Vinci, 500 years ago, was one of those attentive observers: he noted that when trees branch, smaller branches have a precise, mathematical relationship to the branch they sprang from. He was the creator of the well-known Rule of Trees.
